The first Microfinance Success Asia event was successfully held at PARKROYAL Yangon on July 23 and 24, brought by Singapore-based HBZ Events in consultation with Myanmar Microfinance Association (MMFA) under the theme of ‘Managing Sustainability & Impact in a Rapidly Evolving Microfinance Sector’. Microfinance Success Asia 2019 provided a forum for stakeholders to tackle issues and share the successes curated around the corners of microfinance industry. Participants on one hand were engaged in professional exchanges and networking at the event where more than 150 professionals from finance area and other players from respective sectors of the industry were present.
Herman Zaidin, Managing Director of HBZ Events, shared at the beginning, “Both local and regional microfinance industry stakeholders have a platform to learn, network and synergise for the advancement of microfinance solutions and operations from the event.”
Managing Director of Myanmar Development Partners Co. Ltd, and a member of MMFA’s leadership team, Phyu Yamin Myat, addressed delegates with the opening speech, saying, ” Myanmar’s microfinance industry is in its nascent stage but taking off with significant speed, so we need to work towards accelerating further growth because we aim to support majority who are living below the poverty line. Despite having challenges and pressures, we are positive that technology can minimize them. “
According to Mr. Gonzalo González A., CEO, DAWN Microfinance, and Chair of MMFA ICT Working Group, microfinance industry can look forward to next level since its law introduction in 2011, which will be encouraging cross sectorial partnerships and providing services to low income segments and small businesses in Myanmar. Being a two-day event focused on microfinance industry, the event unfolded several topics in different approaches toward the microfinance ecosystem including regulations, sustainability of microfinance institutions, digitalization of processes and tech enabled products and services in the industry.
